Travel Notes: Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park
One of the country's famous attractions, the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is a must visit for anyone who visits the island paradise of Palawan.
The place is tourist friendly with guides waiting at the mouth of the river. Safety orientations are given before docking to the boats and boat drivers are also the tourist guides.
According to the guide, thousands of bats inhabit the caves. They line some of the parts of the caves and some fly around so be careful and alert. You want to be on their good side because you might be showered with Guano or urine.
Unfortunately, like other caves I've been before, you can see some vandalism on some of its walls but so far it is negligible.
Our tour ended after an hour and we didn't finished the whole length because some parts are off limits to visitors and the water was a bit high that day.
The Sabang Village where the river is located is breath taking and picturesque.
Located in Sabang Island, The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.
The day trip from Puerto Princesa takes about two hours and a few minutes of boat ride from the docking station. The boat ride to the island is already a thrill to the senses with the beautiful islands and pristine waters you can see along the way.

However, I should note that there is too much chat and jokes in the boat ride which can sometimes be distracting, at least based on my experience.
The whole river is 1.5 kilometers long, however the whole stretch is not open for public and it may be shortened depending on the tides.
The guides tells the history and uses a lot of humor in identifying the different stalactite and stalagmite formations in the caves.
From animals, mythical creatures, movie stars and saints - it can be said that the names of these formations reflect a bit of our Filipino identity and passions.
Can you guess what this formation is? |
How about this? |
Can you see the Holy Family? |

The cool waters, beautiful green crusted islands and an amusing underground river tour makes Palawan a very worthwhile place to visit in the Philippines.
