Movie Notes: 'Sinister' (2012)
Murderous kids out to get their families. In that case, being grounded would soon be obsolete...
The found footage genre seems to be not running out style in the near future because it has been a staple every year in the box office.
Ethan Hawke stars as a crime writer Ellison Oswalt who moves with his entire family to a murdered family's home. His wife, Tracy (Juliet Rylance) and their two children Ashley (Clare Foley) and Trevor (Michael Hall D'Addario) have no idea about the house's dark past.
Elison finds a box of film and projector in the attic that contains many reels of what seemed like harmless home videos. He soon finds out that they are snuff films (a movie in which an actor is actually murdered or commits suicide) filmed by a mysterious cameraman committing murders on families from hanging, drowning and slitting throats. Like all other found footage films, this ends with them suffering the same fate.

MOVIE NOTES
Sinister offers a new spin to this genre by adding murderous kids controlled by a demonic entity Bughuul or "Mr. Boogie". It is more creepy than scary because of the atmosphere created by the visual of a dark and dreary suburban home (just turn on the lights please), background music and the spooky ghost film viewings. It is full of cliches that have been seen on this genre but it was impressive that it still became effective because it has created a meaningful and consistent narration.
It follows the basic formula in horror movies of using innocent stuff (in this case the kids) into something sinister and evil.
The snuff film footage were a bit too much for me (which I think is good). The final scenes were the best for me especially the twist towards the end.
Ethan Hawke delivered a convincing and impressive portrayal of a desperate fiction writing willing to do anything to create a new story. However, the other casts were more often than not negligible.
I give this movie a rating of 3 out of 5 and listing it under my list of GOOD movies.
