Movie Notes: That Thing Called Tadhana (2015)

That Thing Called Tadhana Movie Scene

I've been hearing rave reviews and feedback about Antoinette Jadaone's film in Twitter thus after our class last Saturday we decided to see it for ourselves. I've been anticipating the screening of That Thing Called Tadhana since I missed it's Cinema One Originals screening in 2014.

The long queue in Robinsons Galleria and the difficulty to get sureseats in Ayala Malls was an indication of how the movie was doing great in the box office.

Tadhana is about the journey of two people in the process of moving on from a heartbreak. Mace (Angelica Panganiban) and Anthony (JM De Guzman) serendipitously crossed paths in the airport while the former was struggling to fit in his excess luggage in an airport in Rome bound for Manila.

That serendipitous moment, spurred an extended journey to Manila, Baguio and Sagada where they would exchange banters about love, heartbreaks and moving on.

The movie reminds me of Richard Linklater's trilogy films Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight. However, unlike the trilogy film, Jadaone's film is simplistic which makes it more relate-able to a lot of people. Despite its simplicity, its artistic and philosophical underpinnings are not compromised. The integration of creative writing piece (The Arrow With The Heart Pierced Through It) in the form of a short story and the quotable quotes (#hugot quotes/lines in social media) have brought in the audience not because they are mere mind conditioning advertising but rather it touches a spot into our emotions.

As the opening credits say...

Para sa mga umibig,
nasaktan,
ngunit umibig pa rin.

You know, tatanga-tanga.

It delves on a topic most of us have gone through in life, the concept of heartbreaks or separation in a general sense. We know how it feels and this inclination makes the movie relevant to most of us.

The movie deserves it box office reception and I personally recommend seeing it especially if your in that phase of binge watching One More Chance or just getting over a heart break.

My thoughts after seeing the movie?  I want to go and see Sagada for myself and do a My Sassy Girl like or Mace like scene.

------------------------

Anthony: "Alam mo 'yung sinabi ni F. Scott Fitzgerald? There are all kinds of love in this world, but never the same love twice."

*******

Mace: "Gaano katagal bago mo siya nakalimutan?"
Anthony: "Matagal."
Mace: "Gaano nga katagal? One year? Two? 3? 4? 5?"
Anthony: "Importante pa ba yun? Ang mahalaga, nakalimutan."

 *******

******

Mace: "Kung mahal mo, habulin mo, ipaglaban mo. ‘Wag mong hintaying may magtulak sa kanya pabalik sa'yo. Hilahin mo. Hanggang kaya mo, wag kang bibitaw. Sorry, mahal ko eh."
