Movie Notes: The Many Levels of Dystopia in 'The Scorch Trials' (2015)
The Scorch Trials has all the exciting elements of a dystopian movie and I can't wait for its conclusion, too bad it's a year of waiting.
Directed by Wes Ball and is the second book from the Maze Runner trilogy, The Scorch Trials is the second movie in the Maze Runner Saga.

PLOT
Escaping from the maze, Thomas (Dylan
O'Brien) and his friends (sorry can’t help it) or Gladers are taken into
custody of Janson (Aidan Guillen) in an undisclosed installation. Troubled by
nightmares of what happened in the Glade, Thomas is suspicious of the sudden
calm and later found out that Janson works for Ava (Patricia Clarkson) and
that they are extracting the immune young adults from the Glade. This ensues a
daring escape from the installation and they are now in the Scorch, a desolate
place where they face the unforgiving weather and landscapes.
They will soon find out little by
little what WICKD has in store for them.
MOVIE NOTES
This is
one hell of a dystopian movie! It felt like watching The Walking Dead and World
War Z in one minute and suddenly shift into Mad Max Fury Road (which is an
awesome movie I must say) and Divergent action.
It almost
has everything – fast moving zombies (the Cranks), gun fire power, a desolate
landscape, army of gun men, evil organization and hope of safe zone or haven.
The
cinematic experience was very good with noteworthy shots reminiscent of again
Mad Max Fury Road, the brown desert sand is really a cinematic landscape.
The
characters however were a bit short in their development and did not really
invited that much curiosity including that of Janson and Brenda (Rosa Salazar) which
is a waste. The remaining cast did well such as Ava with the aura of
Ice Queen, Teresa (Kaya Scodelario) who resembles Kristin Stewart in my eyes, Minho
(King Hong Lee) the badass Asian and Newt (Thomas Brodie Sangster).
It was
enjoyable and exciting to watch especially the zombie (Crank) scenes. We kept guessing
what zombie criteria they fall into – are they The Walking Dead type, World War
Z type or a combination. The scene where Thomas and Brenda were drugged and
slip into a dance hall was a bit confusing too. Where are his friends when they
were finding them? Aren’t they supposed to be there ahead of them and yet when
Thomas came they were just starting to question Marcus, the guy they were
looking for.
All in
all the movie is good and I hope the third installment would not be split into
two movies if you know what I mean?
RATING
This
film deserves a 7.5 out of 10 in my books.
It's worth watching.
Cheers!
