Movie Notes: Does Love Deserve 'One More Chance' (2007)

One More Chance has a special spot in my heart and despite watching it multiple times, it still hits a certain string in my heart.
We are about to see A Second Chance later with my friends and before I make a review for this movie, I might as well write about the original.

One More Chance tells the story of Popoy (John Lloyd Cruz) and Basha (Bea Alonzo) who have been in a relationship since they were in college. They were practically inseparable and their lives have revolved around each other for the longest time. But Basha, stifled by their relationship started to drift away and eventually breaks-up with Popoy. She wanted to find herself and Popoy didn't take this easy at first. A few years after, Popoy has found someone new and their paths cross again. Will they be given a second chance at their love?

This movie directed by Cathy Garcia Molina had a following because of the relevance of its theme - heartbreak and moving on. The lines from the movie were immortalized in love quotes as a proof of the way we embraced this story as our own.

I loved this movie and there was a time I watched this over and over every day. At that time it speaks everything I was going through - the confusion of Basha about herself and her identity to Popoy's adamant persistence on holding on to their relationship. It was painful to watch but the lessons and questions the characters have dealt throughout the story were meaningful - one can learn from them.

The movie portrays a lot of things. It shows strength and courage on holding on and letting go. It provides a deeper meaning towards love and loving. That love should come first from loving oneself and not from the existence of another. We get lost to the idea of the person that we forget the idea of ourselves that are apart from them. This situation have dire consequences once that person ceases to exist in our lives. We are left with what I call Phantom love - a love that you make yourself believe still exists but in reality is only a ghost from a person or memory you have been accustomed having.

I am not a fan of the ending and I prefer the more realistic outcome of another similar movie - Starting Over Again. But this movie has a certain appeal because it shows a bittersweet aspect of love and I would still watch this again.

This movie is able to pull heartstrings especially to everyone who has loved and lost. This movie is for all of us who hope for a second chance in love, no matter how time, space or people have been in between that love.

4/5 - Amazing Movie
